On August 13,
2009, the Kiwanis Club of Bel Air, Maryland, hosted the inter-club
meeting for Division 12 of the Capital District. It was held at
Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland.
One-hundred and
seventy people came from around the district to celebrate this
occasion. Clubs participating were East Baltimore, Hampden Midtown,
Loch Raven, Parkville, Reisterstown and Upper Chesapeake. We were
told that it was the largest turnout at Ripken Stadium for a
nonprofit organization.
The ticket was
only $10 and included a Iron Bird hat. The scoreboard acknowledged
all of the clubs. Since we have partnered with the Boys & Girls
Clubs, the Bel Air Kiwanis Club invited the Harford County Clubs to
attend. Thirty-eight young people came and we treated them to a
voucher of $5 to buy food along with an entrance ticket. They also
enjoyed getting a hat.
Also attending
were Key Club members from Patterson Mill High School in Bel Air.
In 2007, this school was named the number-one high school in the
United States for math and science. Their advisor is Janice
Greenwood and is a member of the Bel Air Kiwanis Club. One of their
members threw out the first pitch along with a member of the Boys &
Girls Club.
For those not
familiar with Ripken Stadium, it was named after our Major League
Baseball Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken, who was born and raised in
Aberdeen, Maryland, and played for the Baltimore Orioles. His
father had been a manager and coach. The stadium is very nice and
has a minor league team called the Iron Birds. They also have three
fields designed after major league stadiums. In August each year, a
World Series is held for 8-12 year old boys from around the world.
Some of them were there to watch the game when Kiwanis was
recognized.
Carl Conway, a past
Bel Air club president, was instrumental in organizing this night
with the Iron Birds at Ripken Stadium.
